Defending Jacob: A Novel by William Landay

This book in particular, I was interested in from the very beginning because of the irony it presented. A first assistant DA was investigating a local murder when his son was accused of the murder. The story line goes back and forth between snippets of the trial and what the family goes through leading up to the trial and during. Would highly recommend.

Spoiler:

The murder gene is also a integral part of this book. The Grandfather, who is in prison for murder, gets involved to help his grandson goes to far. The person Andy suspected all along, Patz, suspiciously turns himself in. While in jail Patz writes a confession, and then commits suicide. With this development, Jacob is let off the hook and his trial ends. As the family tries to rebuild, they visit Jamaica. Jacob gets close to a girl there named Hope. When Hope suddenly disappears, Jacob’s mom immediately starts suspecting. Much of the time during the center of the book Jacob’s mother cannot decide exactly how to react to her son. She feels responsible and guilty, but does not know how to handle this or even merely deal with what she believes her son may be

The next part that is revealed in the trial is that the trial that has been going on throughout the story is not Jacob’s trial. In fact, it is his mother’s trial for killing her son. As it turns out, she intentionally ran into the side of a bridge at high speed with no evidence of breaking.
